Reflecting on 2016

Reflecting on the passing year is one thing I love about December, looking back on the good, the bad and the things to be improved for 2017.

I started off 2016 lost, I had just dropped out of my first year of university, I didn't know what I was going to do, I was feeling demotivated with my job and dissatisfied with my work. I continued on lost for the first few months of 2016.

One day I sat down with my mum at the end of my tether, ready to give up. She asked me what my ideas job would be, I said hotel manager. She asked if there was a degree course for that, I didn't know so I googled it and found a 'International Hotel Management' course at UWTSD, Swansea. Without a UCAS application I emailed the programme director to fight my corner to try and get an interview. I was successful and headed down for an interview where I got offered a place on the spot. Things began falling into place.

I knew student accommodation wasnt for me, I didn't want to live with other people either. I decided I wanted to live on my own and made a scary decision to get a studio flat in the city centre and move away from home.

My flat cost over twice my student loan amount so I knew I needed to get a job and spent the free time I had outside of work applying for jobs in Swansea. I knew I could not go for a waitrrssing job as that would not look good on my CV under Junior Assistant Manager, so I applied for managerial positions and succeeded in getting a position at a SA Brains restaurant as a functions manager.

I started my job at the end of July, moved into my flat on the first of August and started my degree on the twelfth of September. It all came together.

Now, my grades are great, my recent appraisal at work was fantastic and I happily live on my own independently. I love my life, 2016 has been a crucial year for me in giving me some direction and I've learnt a huge amount about myself, life and the work environment.

I celebrated my first anniversary with Adam in November, we went away for a spa stay for his birthday in the middle of December.

What was your highlight of 2016?
